As aides need training, you can make as many copies as you want - there s no restriction when used with aides assigned from your office location. Remember that Home Health Aides must have 12 hours of in-service training every year. LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Identify three types of ostomies a person may have Describe three methods that promote good skin hygiene in a patient with a urostomy, and Explain one tip to prevent problems with a urostomy. OVERVIEW The human body is an amazing, finely tuned creation. It s composed of multiple systems that work together to support life. Each system within the body has its own function in maintaining life, and when any one of these systems malfunctions, life is threatened. Blockage within a waste elimination system is a major threat to its functioning. Correction needs to occur immediately, and when medical interventions don t work, surgical intervention to re-route the flow of waste products is required. Re-routing the system takes waste materials and liquids out of the body via a stoma instead of the normal route. Each surgically created stoma has its own name that describes the location of the intervention. In the urinary system, a urostomy re-routes urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. Home health aides care for ostomy patients in their homes. This includes assisting them not only with their activities of daily living, but also with changing the ostomy bag, and caring for the stoma. The home health aide needs to know the basic tenets of care for patients with ostomies.
