Previous sports injury books have approached such injuries anatomically with a systematic discussion of damage to various parts of the body. In contrast this volume is oriented towards the trauma inflicted in individual sports. The approach taken here will result in some overlap from the acute treatment standpoint, particularly in the field of orthopedic surgery, but we believe the usefulness of approaching the injuries sport by sport will outweigh this slight drawback. Obviously not all physicians will agree on therapy, for there may be both medical and surgical approaches to the same problem, both lead leading to a similar successful result. Cross-referencing has been used frequently throughout the text with the hope of reducing repetition. For example, while good head protection is essential in many sports, it is discussed primarily in the football chapter. Numerous other sports which require headgear protection are then cross reference to the football chapter. Great care has been expended to document each of the chapters with a list of pertinent references. Chapters cover football, baseball, basketball, hockey, rugby, wrestling, gymnastics, soccer, lacrosse, competitive diving, track and field, Nordic and Alpine skiing, surfing, golf, waterskiing, scuba diving, auto racing, triathlon, swimming, judo and karate, tennis, boxing, parachuting and hand gliding, figure skating, bicycle accidents, racquet sports and more. There are further chapters dealing with cardiac status, drugs, dermatology problems, head injuries, shoulder and elbow, knee, hand and wrist, ankle and foot, and more. The final chapter is dedicated to psychological factors in sports injuries.
