Book Descriptions:
This book follows my lighting design course for students of a Master’s in Interior Design at Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, Italy, and my lectures and courses to lighting professionals, but I believe it can be useful to non technical readers as well.

The objective is to present the design of a lighting system in an interior.

In the second edition I tried to improve along the lines I feel a handbook like this needs to follow: I want a practical description of lighting with a theoretical basis, where the concept is followed as closely as possible by the application. All this must be implemented using a language register as simple as possible: the difficulty must be in the concepts and applications, not in the reading.
For these reasons I added a part on the intelligent use of a lighting calculation programme. The objective is not to replace the programme’s manual, but to show the reasoning behind the choices, and how to use this tool effectively.
The book is split into five parts. The first four are: fundamentals of lighting science and basic concepts; applications to lamps; types of luminaires and their tasks; work-flow to create the lighting system. The fifth part, new to the second edition, explains how to calculate a few lighting systems with a free lighting software (DIALux), in order to give a hands deep awareness of how each choice affects the end result.

In this second edition I reorganised the chapters into more coherent educational units and rewrote some of the definitions and explanations. I also added a few questions at the end of each chapter on which the reader can test his or her understanding of the material.

The result is a book that is more than a third longer than the previous edition, with a third more pictures, and more practical applications. Hopefully the reader will find it a third more interesting as well...
